Welcome to Module 9 of this course.

Introduction

In this module, students will observe how Christianity developed in the 19th century. A number of significant changes come in this era, many of which can be traced back to the challenge of Liberal Protestantism, which did away with much of Christian orthodoxy in favor of a highly personal, less dogmatic religion. The conservative reactions, both Catholic and Protestant, sought to secure the truth of the traditional tenets of the faith, whether it be through Church tradition, the pope, or the teachings of Scripture. Additionally, students will learn about the shifts that Christianity underwent in the East, both through established churches and missionary expansions. Finally, students will discover the ways in which the rise of Pentecostalism and the fall of slavery altered Christianity in America and abroad.

After completing this Module, you will be able to:

List the unique traits of the Greek Orthodox Church, identify Greek Orthodoxy's traits in a list, and sequence important events in the Greek Orthodox Church in the 19th century.
List important dogmas of the Catholic Church developed in the 19th century, identify the implications of those dogmas, and apply those dogmas to a scenario.
Match Liberal Protestant scholars to their unique beliefs, identify their beliefs in a list, and apply their beliefs to a scenario.
List some missionary societies of the 19th century, give examples of the kinds of things that missionary societies were created to do, and show the work done by those societies.
Recall the basic traits of Pentecostal Christianity, give examples of the Pentecostal influence on other denominations, and apply Pentecostal beliefs to a scenario.
List the denominations that were split over the issue of slavery in the 19th century, give examples of why the topic of slavery caused such division among Christians in the 19th century, and sequence the important events in William Wilberforce's efforts to free the slaves.
