Welcome to Module 8 of this course.

Introduction

In this module, students will explore the changes that came to the Christian faith after the Protestant Reformation, primarily in England, France, and the fledgling United States. They will explore the philosophical changes that came along with the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution, and the way in which those changes influenced the various Christian movements that arose during this period. This module will present how the Anglican Reformation, the French Revolution, and the First Great Awakening radically altered the course of Christianity in their respective nations. Lastly, the student will observe the rise, along with the Enlightenment, of deism, a precursor to modern atheism and irreligion.

After completing this Module, you will be able to:

List some of the important thinkers of the Enlightenment period, identify the unique contributions of each Enlightenment period thinker, and apply various Enlightenment philosophies to a scenario.
Match the major Enlightenment thinkers of France and England to their philosophies, identify important philosophies of each thinker, and apply their philosophies to a scenario.
Define the Great Awakening and the separation of church and state, give examples of major figures in the Great Awakening and in Christianity during the American Revolution, and sequence the important events in America during the 18th century.
