Inquire: Credibility and Style 

Who Do You Trust?

Books on a shelfMost reading revolves around gathering information and searching for truth. Even recreational reading is a form of searching for truth—truth of the story that is being told. When reading critically for business or education, it is imperative that readers evaluate the credibility and style of the author and text they are examining. Before trusting an author or a publication, savvy readers will make sure they have asked the right questions and eliminated any red flags. They will check the author’s credentials to see if his or her work has been peer-reviewed. They will also examine the vocabulary and word choice and identify any irony or satire. This lesson will address these elements of critical reading.
