Introduction

In this module, you will learn the ethical obligations of public speakers and audience members, what counts as plagiarism, and best ethical practices to ensure you fulfill your obligations. You will also learn what kinds of public speaking exist, how to select a topic, what kind of outline to use, and how to prepare speaking notes. You will learn what speech anxiety is and how to cope with it. Then, you will learn what parts of a speech should be most memorable, what chunking is, what an effective transition is, and how much information counts as too much information. Finally, you will learn how to select a topic, identify the components of an outline, how to create a works cited or reference page, and what a qualified source is.

After completing this Module, you will be able to:

Identify the ethical obligations of a speaker and an audience, define plagiarism, and list ethical practices in communication.
Explain the three kinds of public speaking, and identify how to generate a speaking topic, what outline to use, and how to prepare speaking notes.
Define speech anxiety, explain how students are personally affected by it, and identify how to cope and help others cope with speech anxiety.
Explain how to determine the necessary points of a speech, how to make important sections of a speech stand out, define chunking, and demonstrate an effective transition.
Explain how to select a topic, identify the components of an outline, learn to create a works cited or reference page, and identify what a qualified source is.
