Module 9 Lesson 5 - Inquire & Watch

Inquire: Factors that Affect Solubility

Solubility Problems

Many people have encountered common solubility problems in everyday life. Maybe it was caused by knocking over a candle, spilling candle wax on the table. Or, it could have been from spilling cooking oil on the kitchen floor while preparing a meal. These spills are nearly impossible to remove with just water.

Why do you think this poses a solubility problem? What do you think is the polarity of these substances? What would you do to clean the spills? In this lesson, students will explore factors that affect the solubility of different types of solutes in the presence of water.

Big Question

How does the amount of solvent in a solute affect the rate of dissolving?
